How to prepare Biology for NEET?

Biology certainly carries the heightest weightage (50%) among three subjects for NEET. How to prepare for such an important subject like Biology, for NEET 2025 and beyond?

Vast amount of information is available on the internet related to NEET preparation, but most of that information is not practical. So, lets discuss, how to prepare Biology for NEET in the best possible way?

In this blog I am sharing the most practical method for NEET Biology preparation and I am sure if you follow the advice given in this blog, it will help you to get a good score in Biology in NEET.

1. Read NCERT Text Books:

Everyone says this, but no one will explain exactly how to prepare from NCERT!

a) First read the chapter right from the introduction till the summary. Yes, summary is also equally important from NEET point of view.

b) After first read, try to grasp the meaning of each and every sentence. There should not be a single sentence, whose meaning you do not understand. Many times, the meaning is hidden, you literally have to extract it and understand what the author is exactly trying to say here. For this part, you will require help of an experienced teacher.

c) One very good thing about NCERT books is that they have provided huge space in the form of margin, you can use this for writing key words, important definitions, points that are to be memorized.

d) No need to read any other reference books for understanding the theoretical concepts of Biology subject. Just read NCERT for NEET.

2. Make notes/Mind Maps for Revision before final NEET:

a) There are many chapters in Biology, which are very vast from a content point of view. If you make notes of such chapters e.g. Organisms and Population chapter from the Ecology unit, Molecular basis of inheritance from the genetics unit, you can increase the number of revisions towards the end phases of your NEET preparation.

b) As revision is an extremely important aspect of NEET preparation: More the number of revisions, the better you’ll be able to retain the concepts of the units and more you score in the final NEET.

c) These notes should be divided in two parts.
i) topic that has to be memorized and
ii) conceptual topics.

d) Topics that need to be memorized need more revisions:
These will include-
i) Name of scientists and scientific names of some organisms
ii) Year of discovery or of some important experiments
iii) Examples given in NCERT under various sections

e) Mind Map will cover the entire chapter in a nutshell. Again, this will be useful for increasing the number of revisions you are able to perform, which will ultimately boost your confidence in the examination hall. You can use such types of cards (also called flash cards) for making short notes that need frequent memorization.

3. Solve as many MCQs (of NEET level) as possible:

Yes! After studying, this is the second most important thing to do.

a) Solve questions from previous year papers (NEET PYQs).

b) Solve questions from reference books.

c) Solve questions from your NEET coaching institute assignments.

d) And while doing this, follow a strict time limit.

e) Try not to repeat the same mistakes.

f) Whenever you choose an incorrect answer, always identify the underlying cause which led to the wrong answer. Learning from mistakes is very important to score more in NEET.

g) Many times we hear students saying “Oh! I made a silly mistake”, one can very easily overcome this problem in final NEET exam by increasing the number of questions you solve.

4. Follow the following rules:

a) These two rules are my personalised one, which is the first thing that I share with my students in the class.

Rule Number 1. “Pay attention to all the words in the question”.
Here attention means paying utmost respect and awareness to every aspect of the question.

Rule Number2. “Read all the options, however correct the first few options may sound to you.”

5. Consistency will win half the battle to crack NEET:

By consistently implementing the above 4 points, you will definitely attain victory in NEET, no iota of doubt there.

a) Sometimes, there will be periods of low tide, when we score less marks in some chapter tests, at such times, one has to keep the morale high, not lose confidence and consistently follow the steps.

b) Steps like, “Read the chapter     Revise the notes  Solve more questions    Clarify the doubts”, and move on to the next topic. We will be discussing many more such things in my coming blogs, till then ‘keep on studying’.

Note:

Before joining any institute, please very the quality and teaching experience of teachers working there. Only experienced teachers can guide students in cracking NEET.
